Experience Donald Harrison
Donald Harrison Jr. is a highly influential American jazz saxophonist, composer, and improviser born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1960. Rooted deeply in the city’s vibrant musical tradition – his father was a renowned jazz drummer – Harrison seamlessly blends bebop, post-bop, funk, and R&B with elements of his indigenous African American spiritual heritage, notably incorporating Mardi Gras Indian rhythms and chants into his performances.
He gained prominence in the 1980s playing with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (1981-1985), a crucial period solidifying his improvisational skills. Harrison subsequently led his own ensembles, consistently pushing boundaries and collaborating with diverse artists like Terence Blanchard, Bill Frisell, and Lenny Kravitz (contributing significantly to Kravitz’s *Mama Said* album).
A dedicated educator, he founded the Donald Harrison Music Institute in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina to provide music education to youth. Harrison's discography includes critically acclaimed albums like *Bugsville* (1992) and *I Tried to Tell You* (2017).
