Experience Derrick Morgan

Derrick Morgan, born Derrick Holness in 1938 in Clarendon, Jamaica, is a foundational figure in ska and rocksteady music. Emerging in the late 1950s, he quickly became a prominent vocalist with Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One label, initially as a harmony singer before establishing himself as a solo artist. His early hits like “Forward March” (1960) and “Housewife Special” (1962) helped define the energetic sound of early Jamaican popular music.

Morgan’s style blends soulful vocals with clever lyrical content, often addressing social commentary and everyday life. He transitioned seamlessly into rocksteady with tracks like "Tougher Than Tough" (1966), showcasing a smoother vocal delivery over slower tempos. A prolific recording artist, he also worked with producers Duke Reid and Prince Buster.

Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Morgan continued to record and tour internationally, maintaining a dedicated fanbase. He is recognized for influencing generations of reggae artists and contributing significantly to the global spread of Jamaican music. His enduring catalog remains highly sought after by collectors and continues to inspire contemporary musicians.
