Dennis James (born Dennis James Dwyer, October 29, 1956) is an American baritone vocalist renowned for his contributions to gothic rock, darkwave, and neoclassical dark ambient music. He first gained prominence as the vocalist for Die Form in the early 1980s, alongside Jill Porlock, shaping the band’s signature sound characterized by operatic vocals and atmospheric instrumentation.

Following Die Form’s initial dissolution, James embarked on a prolific solo career beginning in 1990 with the album *Passage*. His style blends classical training—he possesses a formal operatic background—with a distinctly dark aesthetic, often incorporating themes of mortality, spirituality, and the occult. He’s released numerous albums under his own name and through collaborations like Sopor Aeternus & the Ensemble of Shadows (as a guest vocalist), and Tristesse Lente.
