Demarre McGill is a highly acclaimed American clarinetist recognized for his virtuosic technique and captivating performances across diverse musical genres. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he rose to prominence after winning the 1980 Naumburg Young Artist Competition, a pivotal moment launching his international career. McGill served as Principal Clarinetist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for twelve years before dedicating himself fully to a solo career in 2004.
He’s a frequent guest soloist with major orchestras worldwide, including those of Philadelphia, Boston, and Minnesota. Beyond orchestral work, McGill champions contemporary music, commissioning and premiering numerous pieces specifically for the clarinet. He’s known for blending classical repertoire with jazz and popular influences, demonstrating remarkable versatility.
A dedicated educator, McGill holds the position of Professor of Clarinet at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. He is also co-founder with his brother Anthony McGill of “Project Inclusion,” an initiative fostering diversity within classical music. His discography includes critically lauded recordings on BMG Classics and ProArte Records showcasing both standard works and lesser-known gems.
