Experience Delia Agúndez
Delia Agúndez is a highly respected Mexican *son jarocho* vocalist, instrumentalist (jarana jarocha, requinto jarocho), and cultural preservationist. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, she began her musical journey within the family tradition, learning from her mother, the renowned singer and *decimista* (improvisational verse singer), Celso Lagar.
Agúndez distinguishes herself through a commitment to the authentic performance of *son jarocho*, resisting commercialization and prioritizing its historical and social context. She's a master of *versos* – the improvised poetic verses central to the genre – often addressing themes of social justice, community, and everyday life.
A founding member of the influential *Grupo Mono Blanco* (later *Los Diablos Rojos*) in the 1970s, Agúndez has dedicated decades to performing and teaching *son jarocho* nationally and internationally. Her work extends beyond performance; she actively promotes workshops and educational initiatives aimed at sustaining this vital part of Mexican heritage. She received the National Prize for Popular Arts and Traditions in 2016 recognizing her lifetime dedication.
