Experience David Virelles

David Virelles is a Cuban-born pianist and composer, currently based in New York City, renowned for his deeply informed and subtly innovative approach to jazz and Latin music. He began his formal musical training at the Instituto Cubano del Arte y el Cinematografía (ICAIC) in Havana, later studying at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Joaquín Turina.

Virelles gained prominence as a key member of Henry Threadgill’s Zooid ensemble from 2006-2017, contributing significantly to their complex and highly acclaimed compositions. He’s also collaborated extensively with artists like Wadada Leo Smith, John Hollenbeck, and Andrew Cyrille.

His solo work showcases a unique blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms, modernist harmony, and improvisational freedom. Albums like *Santa Maria la Blanca* (2014) and *Codigo* (2017) – both featuring his large ensemble – demonstrate his compositional prowess and dedication to exploring Cuban musical heritage through a contemporary lens. Virelles was named a 2017 MacArthur Fellow, recognized for “a strikingly original voice in contemporary jazz composition” and his commitment to expanding the possibilities of improvised music.
