Experience David Stout
David Stout is a highly respected American jazz pianist, composer, and educator. Born in 1950, Stout gained prominence throughout the 1980s and 90s as a key figure in the post-bop tradition, deeply influenced by McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans but forging his own distinct voice. He’s known for his powerfully rhythmic playing, harmonic sophistication, and lyrical improvisations.
Stout’s extensive discography as a leader includes albums like *Rhythm & Rhyme* (1988) and *Pathways* (1992), both receiving critical acclaim. He's also a prolific sideman, appearing on recordings with artists such as Buddy DeFranco, Art Blakey (though not extensively documented on major Blakey recordings), and Slide Hampton.
Beyond performance, Stout dedicated over three decades to jazz education at the University of Kansas, where he served as Director of Jazz Studies until his retirement in 2018. His pedagogical approach focused on developing individual musicality alongside technical proficiency. He continues to perform and compose selectively, maintaining a legacy as both a masterful performer and influential educator within the jazz community.
