David Binney is a highly regarded American jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator. Born in 1950, he gained prominence in the 1980s after relocating to New York City and performing with artists like Gil Goldstein, Kenny Wheeler, and Michael Formanek. Binney’s sound is characterized by a lyrical, harmonically sophisticated approach to the tenor saxophone, often incorporating elements of post-bop and contemporary classical music.

He's best known for co-leading the quartet Binney/Siegal with pianist Fred Hersch – a collaboration spanning decades and resulting in numerous critically acclaimed albums including *Garden of Souls* (1998) and *Twine* (2008). Beyond this partnership, Binney has released several albums as a leader on labels like ECM and Criss Cross Jazz, showcasing his compositions and improvisational skills.

A dedicated educator, he’s held teaching positions at various institutions including The New School and Manhattan School of Music. Throughout his career, Binney has consistently received positive reviews for his inventive playing and thoughtful compositions, solidifying his position as a significant figure in modern jazz. He continues to perform and record actively.
