Daniel Ottensamer is an Austrian clarinetist internationally recognized for his virtuosity and distinctive, lyrical sound. Born in 1986 into a musical family – his father, Ernst Ottensamer, is a renowned Vienna Philharmonic principal clarinetist – Daniel initially pursued a physics degree before dedicating himself fully to music. He completed his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with distinction.
Ottensamer gained prominence as the principal clarinetist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra starting in 2013, a position he still holds. Beyond orchestral work, he’s a celebrated soloist, performing with major orchestras worldwide including the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
His repertoire spans from Mozart and Weber to contemporary compositions, often showcasing his improvisational skills. He’s particularly known for championing lesser-known works for clarinet. Ottensamer has released several critically acclaimed albums on Deutsche Grammophon, including recordings of concertos by Copland and Nielsen, earning him Echo Klassik awards. He frequently collaborates with chamber ensembles and is dedicated to music education through masterclasses and workshops.
