Daniel Oren is an Israeli-born conductor renowned for his passionate interpretations of Italian opera, particularly Verdi and Puccini. Born in 1935, he studied piano and composition at the Tel Aviv Academy of Music before moving to Rome in 1958 to further his conducting studies with Bruno Bettinelli.
Oren’s international career blossomed in the 1960s, leading to principal conductor positions with the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (1969-1972) and later, a long association with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, serving as Music Director from 1984-1986. He’s a frequent guest conductor at leading opera houses worldwide including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and the Vienna State Opera.
Known for a dramatic and emotionally charged style emphasizing vocal beauty, Oren has championed lesser-known works alongside staples of the repertoire. He’s recorded extensively, notably numerous Verdi operas including *Rigoletto*, *La Traviata*, and *Aida*, often featuring prominent singers like Plácido Domingo and José Carreras.
