Experience Dang Thai Son
Dang Thai Son is a Vietnamese-American classical pianist renowned for his poetic interpretations and exceptional technical skill. Born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1961, he began piano studies with his mother at age five and later with the esteemed Professor Trần Trí Chuân. He rose to international prominence after winning First Prize and the Gold Medal at the 1986 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw – the first Asian pianist to achieve this honor.
Son’s repertoire centers heavily on Romantic composers, particularly Chopin, but also includes works by Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Beethoven, and Debussy. His playing is characterized by a lyrical quality, nuanced phrasing, and a deeply personal connection to the music. He avoids overt virtuosity for its own sake, prioritizing emotional depth and clarity of expression.
Following his Chopin Competition victory, Son embarked on a successful international career performing with leading orchestras worldwide. He currently holds a professorship at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, continuing to influence the next generation of pianists. Recordings include complete Chopin Etudes and Preludes, consistently praised for their sensitivity and artistry.
