The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra (Κυπριακή Συμφωνική Ορχήστρα) is the national orchestra of the Republic of Cyprus, established in 1983. Initially a chamber orchestra, it evolved to its current symphonic size by 1991 under the artistic direction of Marios Ioannou Elia. The orchestra is based in Nicosia and performs regularly at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre and other venues across the island.
Its repertoire spans from Baroque to contemporary works, with a focus on showcasing both established masters and Cypriot composers. The CSO has collaborated with internationally renowned soloists including Joshua Bell, Lang Lang, and Mischa Maisky. A core mission involves promoting musical education through outreach programs and performances for young audiences.
The orchestra receives significant funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth of Cyprus. It has undertaken several international tours throughout Europe and beyond, representing Cypriot culture on a global stage. Notably, the CSO released a critically acclaimed recording of works by composer Dimitris Fotiou in 2017 and continues active recording projects. They are members of the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO).
