Cleveland Watkiss is a highly acclaimed British vocalist, composer, and improviser, pivotal in the development of jazz, opera, and world music fusions. Emerging from the London jazz scene in the 1980s, he initially gained prominence with the innovative Jazz Warriors collective, showcasing his remarkable vocal range and scat singing abilities.

Watkiss’s style is uniquely characterized by a virtuosic blend of operatic technique, soulful jazz phrasing, and influences from Caribbean and African musical traditions – particularly his Barbadian heritage. He’s renowned for his dynamic live performances and ability to seamlessly navigate diverse genres.

Throughout his career, Watkiss has collaborated with numerous leading artists including Abdullah Ibrahim, Courtney Pine, and Peter Gabriel. He’s released several critically lauded albums as a leader, including *Higher Ground* (1997) and *Battles Won* (2006), earning multiple awards and nominations – notably a MOBO Award for Jazz Act of the Year in 1997. Beyond performance, Watkiss is a dedicated educator, holding positions at Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
