Experience Christoph Irniger
Christoph Irniger is a Swiss-born, Berlin-based guitarist and composer renowned for his uniquely personal approach to contemporary improvised and composed music. Initially trained classically, Irniger shifted focus towards free improvisation in the 1990s, quickly establishing himself within European experimental circles. He’s a central figure in the thriving Berlin improvisation scene, frequently collaborating with artists like Axel Dörner, Ute Körner, and Michael Thieke.
Irniger’s playing eschews conventional guitar techniques; he often employs extended techniques – preparations involving objects placed on or between the strings – to create a diverse sonic palette ranging from delicate harmonics and percussive textures to distorted drones. His compositions, while often structurally open, demonstrate a meticulous attention to timbre and spatialization.
He's released numerous albums as a leader and sideman on labels including Clean Feed Records, Creative Sources Recordings and Not Applicable. Notably, his work *Helvetia* (2018) received critical acclaim for its nuanced exploration of sound and silence. Irniger also actively teaches workshops internationally focusing on improvisation and extended guitar techniques, solidifying his influence on a new generation of musicians. He continues to tour and record extensively.
