Experience Chaya Czernowin

Chaya Czernowin (born 1957 in Tel Aviv, Israel) is a highly acclaimed contemporary composer known for her intensely detailed and complex orchestral and vocal works. She studied with Tristan Murail in Paris and earned a doctorate from Harvard University. Czernowin’s music is characterized by its exploration of spectralism, microtonality, and extended vocal techniques, often creating sound worlds that are both fragile and overwhelmingly powerful.

Her compositional process involves meticulous sonic investigation, frequently focusing on the “inner life” of instruments and voices – breaths, whispers, and subtle timbral shifts. Major works include *Hidasim* (1997), *Lohengrin Fragment* (2008), *Pnima* (2012), and *AMA* (2018), a large-scale orchestral piece commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic.

Czernowin has received numerous awards including the Fromm Foundation Commission, the Koussevitzky International Recording Prize, and a MacArthur Fellowship (2015). She currently holds the Isidor and Seville Sulzer Endowed Professorship in Composition at Harvard University.
