Carlos Foggin is a highly respected American jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator with a career spanning over five decades. Born in 1938 in Richmond, Virginia, Foggin initially gained prominence as a sideman, notably with R&B legends like Ruth Brown and jazz giants including Max Roach and McCoy Tyner throughout the 1960s and 70s.
He established himself as a leader in the late 1970s, releasing albums like *Momentum* (1979) and *High Energy* (1982), showcasing his hard bop and post-bop influences blended with soulful expression. Foggin’s playing is characterized by a robust tone, lyrical phrasing, and improvisational dexterity. He’s known for incorporating elements of gospel and blues into his jazz vocabulary.
