Experience Carla Bley
Carla Bley (born Carla Borghese, May 11, 1936) is an American jazz composer, pianist, organist, and bandleader renowned for her large-scale, conceptually ambitious works. Emerging in the 1960s New York avant-garde jazz scene, she initially gained attention through collaborations with Paul Haines, notably the opera *Escalator over the Hill* (1971), a sprawling, multi-media production.
Bley’s compositional style defies easy categorization. While rooted in jazz improvisation and free jazz principles, it incorporates elements of rock, blues, classical music, and even musique concrète. Her arrangements are often complex and feature unconventional instrumentation. She frequently employs extended forms and narrative structures.
Throughout her career, Bley has led various ensembles – including the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Association – and released numerous critically acclaimed albums like *Trouble is My Business* (1972) and *Dinner Music* (1977). A MacArthur Fellow (1985), she received a Grammy Award for Best Large Ensemble Performance in 2009 for *I Heard You Looking*.
