She transitioned to *Arabesk* music – a genre blending Turkish folk with Arabic influences – becoming a pivotal figure in its popularization despite initial societal resistance.
Ersoy is renowned for her powerful contralto voice, dramatic stage presence, and flamboyant style. A trailblazer, she publicly transitioned in the 1980s, becoming one of Turkey’s first openly transgender performers; this courageously challenged societal norms.
