Brian Haas is a highly respected American guitarist, composer, and educator specializing in the music of the Balkans, particularly Romani (Gypsy) jazz and Macedonian Romani traditions. He began studying with legendary Macedonian Romani guitarist Šaban Bajramami in 1993, becoming his primary student until Bajramami’s passing in 2016. This mentorship deeply shaped Haas’s distinctive style – a vibrant blend of virtuosic technique, rhythmic drive, and emotional depth.

Haas tours internationally as a soloist and with various ensembles, including his own Brian Haas Quartet. He’s collaborated with prominent musicians like violinist/vocalist Esma Redžepova (the “Queen of Romani Music”) and clarinetist Mustafa Sandal. His discography includes albums like *Šaban* (2006), a tribute to his mentor, and *Romani Guitar* (2014), showcasing original compositions alongside traditional pieces.

Beyond performance, Haas is dedicated to preserving and promoting Balkan Romani music through workshops and educational initiatives. He holds a PhD in ethnomusicology from the University of Texas at Austin, further solidifying his scholarly approach to this rich musical heritage.
