Brett Dean (born 1961, Brisbane, Australia) is a highly acclaimed Australian composer, violist, and conductor celebrated for his intensely dramatic and emotionally resonant musical language. Initially gaining recognition as a violist – a member of the Melbourne String Ensemble and later principal viola with the Berlin Philharmonic for 14 years – Dean transitioned to a full-time composing career in 1999.
His compositional output is diverse, encompassing orchestral works like *Music for Prisms* and *Testament*, chamber music including the string quartets *Eclipse* and *Hidden Thoughts*, and operatic works such as *Bliss* (2017) based on Peter Carey’s novel, which garnered international praise. Dean’s style often features complex textures, virtuosic writing, and explores themes of psychological depth and human experience.
He frequently collaborates with leading orchestras and performers worldwide. Significant awards include the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition (2009) for *Amadigi*, and numerous accolades for his operas and instrumental pieces. Dean is currently Composer in Residence with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, continuing to push boundaries within contemporary classical music. His work is published by Boosey & Hawkes.
