Experience Brendan Canty
Brendan Canty is an American drummer and multi-instrumentalist, best known as a founding member of the influential post-hardcore band Fugazi. Born in 1962, Canty’s drumming style is characterized by its precision, unconventional time signatures, and dynamic control – eschewing traditional rock fills for a more textural and rhythmic approach.
Prior to Fugazi, he played in bands like Razz, Lexie & the Dubsters, and Beefeater. Following Fugazi’s indefinite hiatus in 2003, Canty has remained actively involved in music. He co-founded the record label Dischord Records with Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, playing a crucial role in the DIY ethics of the Washington D.C. hardcore scene.
Beyond drumming, Canty is a skilled photographer and film editor; he directed and edited the documentary *Instrument* (1999), focusing on experimental instrument builders. He’s collaborated with artists like Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and continues to perform with various projects including Q&Not U (with former Q and Not U members) demonstrating his versatility beyond Fugazi’s established sound. His contributions have significantly impacted independent music culture.
