Billy Martin is a highly respected American drummer and composer, best known for his long-standing membership with Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW). Born in 1966, Martin’s career began in the vibrant New York City jazz scene of the 1980s, quickly establishing him as a uniquely inventive percussionist. While rooted in jazz, his style defies easy categorization, incorporating elements of funk, electronica, hip-hop, and world music – often described as “organic groove.”

Beyond MMW’s prolific output of over twenty albums, Martin has released several acclaimed solo albums including *Maximum Velocity* (2004) and *Bang!* (2016), showcasing his compositional skills and expanding his sonic palette with electronic processing and sampling. He's collaborated extensively with artists like John Zorn, Laurie Anderson, and Marc Ribot.

Martin is also recognized for his innovative use of prepared drums and looping techniques, creating complex rhythmic textures. He founded the Billy Martin Solstice project – annual performances coinciding with the summer solstice – further demonstrating his commitment to improvisation and community engagement. His work consistently pushes boundaries within contemporary instrumental music.
