Bertrand de Billy is a highly respected French pianist and conductor, renowned for his elegant interpretations and refined technique. Born in 1951, he initially gained prominence as a concert pianist, winning the prestigious Long-Thibaud Competition in 1978. While continuing to perform as a soloist – notably with major orchestras like the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France – de Billy transitioned significantly into conducting during the 1990s.

He served as Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon from 1998 to 2008, elevating its international profile. De Billy is particularly celebrated for his interpretations of French repertoire, including composers like Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc, but his range extends to Mozart, Beethoven, and contemporary works. He frequently appears at leading festivals including Salzburg and Verbier.

Known for his meticulous preparation and lyrical phrasing, de Billy’s recordings have received critical acclaim, often focusing on chamber orchestral works and vocal music. He currently holds the position of Principal Conductor of the Wiener Kammerchor since 2023 and continues an active career as both pianist and conductor globally.
