Experience Barbara Dragan
Barbara Dragan is a Polish vocalist, composer, and arranger renowned for her distinctive approach to vocal jazz and improvised music. Emerging in the late 1990s, she quickly gained recognition for her expansive vocal range – spanning multiple octaves – and her innovative use of extended vocal techniques, including multiphonics and circular singing.
Dragan’s career includes collaborations with prominent figures in both the Polish and international avant-garde jazz scenes, such as Tim Berne, Mark Helias, and Han Bennink. She leads the critically acclaimed band Barbsian, exploring a unique soundscape blending free improvisation, contemporary jazz, and elements of folklore.
Her albums, including “Season Changes” (2017) and “Up Close” (2020), have received widespread praise for their originality and emotional depth. Dragan's work consistently challenges conventional notions of vocal performance, prioritizing texture and sonic exploration over traditional lyrical narratives. She frequently performs at international jazz festivals and workshops, actively promoting experimental vocal practices. A graduate of the Academy of Music in Katowice (vocal studies), Dragan also dedicates time to teaching and mentoring emerging vocalists.
