Azar Lawrence is a highly respected American jazz saxophonist and composer, deeply rooted in the post-bop tradition while consistently pushing its boundaries. Born in 1956, he gained prominence as a member of Elvin Jones’ Jazz Machine from 1982-1985, a formative experience that significantly shaped his improvisational approach and rhythmic sensibilities.

Lawrence's solo career blossomed in the late 80s with albums like *East of the Sun* (1988) and *Mystic Journey* (1993), showcasing his lyrical tenor saxophone playing and sophisticated compositions. His style blends hard bop intensity with modal jazz exploration and elements of spiritual jazz, often featuring complex harmonies and driving rhythms.
