Experience Antonio Méndez
Antonio Méndez (born 1972 in Havana, Cuba) is a highly respected percussionist, composer, and educator renowned for his mastery of Afro-Cuban rhythms. He began his musical journey at age five, studying with his father, Guillermo Méndez, a prominent percussionist himself. Méndez emigrated to the United States in 1990 and quickly became a sought-after performer, collaborating with artists spanning diverse genres including jazz (Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D'Rivera), Latin jazz (Eddie Palmieri), and contemporary music (Steve Reich).
His distinctive style blends traditional Cuban *rumba*, *son*, and *guaguancó* with innovative arrangements and improvisational flair. Méndez is celebrated for his virtuosic playing on the *cajón*, *bongó*, *timbales*, and various other percussion instruments.
He has released several critically acclaimed albums as a leader, notably “Afrocubano” (2003) and “Sonando” (2016), showcasing original compositions rooted in Cuban heritage. Beyond performance, Méndez is dedicated to music education, holding positions at Princeton University and leading workshops globally.
