Angela Hewitt is a Canadian pianist renowned globally for her interpretations of Bach. Born in 1958, she began piano studies aged three and later trained at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and with Bruno Giuranna in Italy. Hewitt’s career gained significant momentum after winning the International Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1985.
She is celebrated for her deeply thoughtful and technically brilliant performances, particularly of Bach’s keyboard works – *The Well-Tempered Clavier* being a landmark recording project completed over several years. Hewitt possesses a remarkably clear and articulate touch, often described as possessing both power and intimacy.
Beyond Bach, her repertoire includes Scarlatti, Ravel, Chopin, and Liszt. She founded the Trasimeno Music Festival in Italy in 1997, serving as its artistic director. Numerous awards recognize her artistry including a Companion of the Order of Canada, Gramophone’s Gold Disc award (multiple times), and several Juno Awards. Hewitt frequently performs with leading orchestras worldwide and remains a highly respected figure in classical music performance and recording.
