Andris Nelsons is a Latvian conductor renowned for his dynamic interpretations and leadership in the classical music world. Born in 1978 in Riga, Latvia, Nelsons began his musical journey as a trumpet player before transitioning to conducting. He gained international acclaim as the music director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (2010–2015), where his energetic and precise style revitalized the ensemble’s performances.

Nelsons is currently the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 2014, and also serves as the Gewandhauskapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra since 2018. His conducting style is characterized by emotional intensity, clarity, and a deep understanding of both traditional repertoire and contemporary works.

Throughout his career, Nelsons has been celebrated for his interpretations of composers such as Mahler, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky. He has recorded extensively with major labels like Deutsche Grammophon, earning Grammy Awards for Best Orchestral Performance in 2018 for Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and in 2020 for Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
