Alexandra Preucil is a highly regarded American violist, celebrated for her versatile career encompassing solo performance, chamber music, and orchestral leadership. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music where she studied with Joseph de Pasquale, Preucil rose to prominence as the principal violist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 1996 to 2018 – a remarkably long tenure for such a demanding position.

Beyond her orchestral commitments, she maintains an active solo career, performing extensively throughout North America and Europe. She’s commissioned and premiered numerous works specifically for viola, expanding the instrument’s repertoire. Preucil is a founding member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and frequently appears with prestigious ensembles like Musicians from Marlboro.

Her discography includes critically acclaimed recordings of Bach's Suites for Solo Viola (Nimbus Records), lauded for their technical brilliance and interpretive depth. She’s also known for her dedication to teaching, holding positions at SUNY Stony Brook and frequently offering masterclasses internationally. Preucil's playing is characterized by its rich tone, expressive phrasing, and profound musicality.
