Alexander Soddy is a highly regarded British conductor, currently serving as the Principal Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (a position he assumed in 2024). Prior to this, he held the position of Chief Conductor of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich from 2019-2023, significantly raising their international profile.

Soddy’s repertoire is broad, encompassing works from the Baroque period to contemporary compositions, with a particular affinity for Russian and British composers – notably Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Britten. He is praised for his insightful interpretations and meticulous attention to orchestral detail.

A graduate of the Royal College of Music, Soddy gained early recognition through conducting masterclasses with figures like Colin Davis and Bernard Haitink. He has collaborated with leading orchestras worldwide including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, and the Orchestre National de France. His discography includes critically acclaimed recordings with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich on the Pentatone label, featuring works by Rachmaninoff and Weinberg. He is known for championing lesser-known composers alongside established masters.
