Experience Alban Berg

Alban Berg (1885-1935) was a pivotal Austrian composer of the Second Viennese School, alongside Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. Initially a student of Schoenberg, Berg developed a highly individual compositional voice, blending late-Romantic sensibilities with atonality and, later, serialism. He wasn’t a strict dogmatist regarding twelve-tone technique, often incorporating tonal allusions and expressive melodic fragments within its framework.

Berg’s output is relatively small but profoundly influential. He achieved international renown with his operas *Wozzeck* (1925), a groundbreaking work depicting the plight of a soldier, and *Lulu* (unfinished at his death), a psychologically complex portrait of a femme fatale. His *Violin Concerto* (1935), written in memory of Manon Gropius, is considered one of the most important violin concertos of the 20th century.

Characterized by intense emotionality, lyrical beauty even within dissonance, and sophisticated orchestration, Berg's music explores themes of suffering, alienation, and forbidden desire. He skillfully integrated elements of traditional forms like sonata form and variations into his atonal language.
