Alan Thomas is a British record producer and mixing engineer renowned for his work across a diverse range of genres, particularly electronic music, post-punk, and new wave. Beginning his career at Blackwood Studios in the late 1970s, he quickly became a pivotal figure in the Factory Records sound. He’s best known for his extensive collaboration with Joy Division, engineering and mixing their seminal albums *Unknown Pleasures* (1979) and *Closer* (1980), significantly shaping their atmospheric and emotionally resonant sonic landscape.

Beyond Joy Division, Thomas engineered and/or mixed albums for artists like New Order (early releases including “Ceremony”), The Durutti Column, A Certain Ratio, and Section 25. His production style is characterized by spaciousness, clarity, and an emphasis on capturing the raw energy of live performance. He often employed innovative recording techniques for the time, contributing to the distinctive sound of Manchester's vibrant music scene.
