He began his professional career at age 16 accompanying legendary Buena Vista Social Club vocalist Omara Portuondo, a collaboration lasting over a decade and establishing his international profile.

Pérez formally studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana (ISA), graduating with honors. He later served as musical director for several prominent Cuban artists including Chucho Valdés and Issac Delgado. His solo career blossomed with albums like *Energía* (2008) and *Pa’l Monte* (2014), earning critical acclaim for their vibrant arrangements and sophisticated harmonic language.

A prolific collaborator, Pérez has worked with artists across genres including Richard Bona and Esperanza Spalding. He received a Latin Grammy Award nomination for Best Instrumental Album in 2018 for *El Mismo Sol*, showcasing his compositional prowess.
