Akiko Suwanai is a highly acclaimed Japanese-American violinist recognized for her intensely passionate performances and technical brilliance. Born in 1970, she began violin studies at age five and quickly distinguished herself, winning the Paganini International Competition in 1990 – a feat rarely achieved by non-European violinists.

Suwanai’s career encompasses solo appearances with leading orchestras worldwide, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, and NHK Symphony Orchestra. She is known for a repertoire spanning Baroque to contemporary works, with a particular affinity for challenging and emotionally resonant pieces like those by Paganini, Prokofiev, and Bartók.

Beyond orchestral work, Suwanai is a dedicated chamber musician, collaborating with prominent artists. She’s also championed contemporary composers, commissioning and premiering numerous works. A graduate of the Juilliard School where she studied with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang, Suwanai's playing is characterized by its vibrant tone, expressive phrasing, and fearless virtuosity. She currently resides in Boston and continues an active performing and teaching schedule.
