Adam Makowicz is a Polish jazz pianist renowned for his virtuosic technique and deeply rooted improvisational style. Born in 1951, Makowicz began formal piano training at age five and quickly distinguished himself, graduating from the Warsaw Music Academy. He gained international recognition after winning the prestigious Martial Solal International Jazz Piano Competition in Liège, Belgium in 1978.
Makowicz’s playing is characterized by a blend of bebop influences – particularly drawing from Bud Powell and Art Tatum – with elements of classical music and Polish folk traditions. He's known for incredibly fast, complex runs and harmonic sophistication. Throughout the 1980s, he emigrated to the United States, becoming a fixture in the New York jazz scene.
He has collaborated extensively with leading jazz musicians including Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, and John Abercrombie, releasing numerous albums as a leader and sideman on labels like Criss Cross Jazz. A prolific performer, Makowicz continues to tour internationally and lead workshops, cementing his legacy as a major figure in contemporary jazz piano. His dedication to preserving and evolving the jazz tradition has earned him critical acclaim and a devoted following.
