Alert

Katia and Marielle Labèque are a French piano duo renowned for their ensemble of synchronicity and energy. The sisters were born in Bayonne, on the southwest coast of France. They began learning piano at ages three and five under the tutelage of their Italian mother, Ada Cecchi, who was a former student of Marguerite Long, a distinguished French pianist.

The Labèques' professional career took off after they won the 1961 ARD International Music Competition in Munich. They gained international acclaim in 1980 with their two-piano interpretation of Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue". Their style is versatile, covering baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary genres, which has allowed them to perform with many prestigious orchestras worldwide.

Their discography is extensive and includes works by Mozart, Schubert, Ravel and Glass. They have also collaborated with contemporary composers like Philip Glass and Thom Yorke from Radiohead. The sisters' innovative spirit extends beyond classical music; they've established the Katia & Marielle Labèque Foundation to support young musicians and commission new musical works.

Their achievements include Grammy nominations, honorary doctorates from Turin University, and Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur awards from the French government. In 2020, they received Spain's prestigious Premio Donostia award for lifetime achievement.
