Hauschka, the stage name of German composer and pianist Volker Bertelmann, has carved out a unique and innovative niche in the world of contemporary classical music. With his unconventional approach to piano playing and his incorporation of prepared piano techniques, he has captivated audiences around the globe with his mesmerizing compositions.

Born in 1966 in Ferndorf, Germany, Hauschka's musical journey began at a young age when he started taking piano lessons. However, it was during his time at university that he discovered a passion for experimental music and composition. Inspired by the likes of John Cage and Steve Reich, Hauschka embarked on a quest to push the boundaries of traditional piano playing.

Hauschka's distinctive style revolves around the use of prepared piano techniques. By placing various objects such as screws, rubber erasers, or aluminum foil on the strings inside the piano, he transforms its sound into something truly extraordinary. This unconventional approach allows him to create a wide range of textures and timbres that are both captivating and otherworldly.

Throughout his career, Hauschka has released numerous albums that showcase his inventive musicality. His debut album "Substantial" was released in 2004 and received critical acclaim for its fresh take on contemporary classical music. Since then, he has continued to release albums that push artistic boundaries while maintaining an emotional depth that resonates with listeners.

One notable accomplishment in Hauschka's career is his collaboration with renowned Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson on the soundtrack for the critically acclaimed film "Adrift." Their hauntingly beautiful compositions perfectly complemented the movie's narrative, earning them widespread praise from both critics and audiences alike.

In addition to composing original works for film and television, Hauschka has also performed live extensively throughout Europe and North America. His captivating performances often feature improvisation alongside meticulously crafted compositions.
